JEFFERSON SCHOOL.
Built in 1867, Jefferson School (4th & Jefferson St.) was first used by upper grade students, later to become a high
school. Rebuilt in 1919 after a fire, it then operated as a junior high school until 1938, when it was closed as being
non-adaptable for school use. It was finally sold to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and has since been demolished.
"On September 6, 1866, a contract was issued for a four room, two story building to be built at fourth and Jefferson for $ 8,200. The interest rate was 10%. The lot was purchased from Dr. Johnson for $ 1,750. The school was completed the following year and officially named in 1870. The upper floor was for females with Lena Bruere as the teacher, and the lower floor was for males with Mr. Fritsch as the teacher. It was first used by upper grade students and later as a high school. It was destroyed by fire on Febuary 14th, 1918. It was remodeled and rebuilt the following year and used as the St. Charles Junior High School until 1938, when it was sold for $ 6,000 to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It is no longer standing."
