The information on these microfiche consists of microfilmed copies of histories or personal narratives written about the Civil War or particular units in existence during the Civil War.


Many of these books are long out of print and most are not indexed. Information is not available on all units. The unit name or the author of the work is indicated on the top of the fiche.

BURIAL REGISTERS FOR MILITARY POSTS, CAMPS,
AND STATIONS, 1768-1921

This is a reproduction of a two volume register of burials at military posts, camps, and stations from 1768-1921. Most of the burials listed occurred between 1860 and 1890.
The registers are arranged by the name of the military post, and then roughly by date of burial. A table of contents is available. The registers include soldiers of the Regular Army and Union Army volunteers. Civilians, wives or children of military personnel are also listed. There are some listings for Confederate Army Soldiers.
If available, the following information is given for the deceased: name, rank, company, regiment, date of death, location of grave, and remarks which map include the cause of death.

This publication reproduces more than 166,000 card records of headstone (gravestone) contracts provided for deceased Union veterans of the U.S. Civil War. A few War of 1812 veterans are included.
The records consist of cards arranged alphabetically by surname. The cards include some or all of the following information for each soldier: rank, company, and regiment; place of burial; grave number; and date of death.

The compiled service records consist of a jacket-envelope for each soldier, labeled with his name, his rank, and the unit in which he served. The compiled service record may include; card abstracts of entries relating to the soldier as found in original muster rolls, returns, descriptive books and lists of deserters, and for the Missouri Home Guards. They also contain the originals of any papers relating solely to the soldier.
The records are arranged by unit name. In order to determine the unit in which a soldier served consult the Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers.

On March 26, 1863, the Secretary of War issued an order directing the Adjutant General to organize black regiments in the Mississippi Valley. On May 22, the War Department established a Bureau of Colored Troops to handle the recruitment, organization, and service of the newly organized black regiments. State designations were assigned to the regiments except in Louisiana. The regiments in that state were mustered into federal service with Native Guard and Corps d'Afrique designations. In early 1864 all regiments with State, Corps d'Afrique, or Native Guard designations were redesignated numerically as United States Colored Troops.
This index is arranged alphabetically by the soldier's surname and includes the unit, company and rank. Copies of service records may be requested from the National Archives.

REGISTER OF ENLISTMENTS IN THE U.S. ARMY,

This microfilm reproduces registers of names of enlisted men in the Regular Army. The information was compiled from enlistment papers, muster rolls of the Regular Army, and other records. Except for pension records, these registers may be the only source of information on enlisted personnel serving in the Regular Army during the 19th century.
Entries for each may show: when, where, and by whom he was enlisted; the period of enlistment; place of birth; age at time of enlistment; civilian occupation; physical description; unit or regiment to which he was assigned and additional remarks.
The records are arranged chronologically and thereunder alphabetically by the first letter of surname (i.e., Smith, Saunders, Sutherland, Samuels). The entries for individual soldiers are chronological by date of enlistment.

SPECIAL SCHEDULES FOR THE ELEVENTH CENSUS
1890 - MISSOURI


These schedules enumerate Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War. All Missouri counties are available.
Included on the microfilm are the names, organizations, and length of service of those who had served in the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps of the United States in the war of the rebellion, who were survivors at the time the census was taken in 1890, and the widows of soldiers, sailors, or marines.
For the individuals listed the following information is included:
  1. Name of the veteran, or if he did not survive, the names of both the widow and her deceased husband
  2. The veteran's rank, company, regiment or vessel
  3. Date of enlistment, date of discharge, and length of service in years, months, and days
  4. Post office and address of each person listed
  5. Disability incurred by the veteran and remarks necessary to complete statement of his term of service

By 1901, Confederate veterans' organizations were advocating a system by which their comrades' graves should be marked. Legislation providing for the marking of Confederate graves was passed in 1906 and by 1912 the Commissioner for Marking the Graves of Confederate Dead produced a 665 page burial register. The register details the resting places of approximately 25,000 Confederate Veterans and includes information about military service, death and the number and locality of the grave.
