BURIAL REGISTERS FOR MILITARY POSTS, CAMPS,
AND STATIONS, 1768-1921

This is a reproduction of a 2 volume register of burials at military posts, camps, and stations from 1768-1921. Most of the burials listed occurred between 1860 and 1890.


The registers are arranged by the name of the military post, and then roughly by date of burial. A table of contents is available. The registers include soldiers of the Regular Army and Union Army volunteers. Civilians, wives or children of military personnel are also listed. There are some listings for Confederate Army Soldiers.


If available, the following information is given for the deceased: name, rank, company, regiment, date of death, location of grave, and remarks which map include the cause of death.


HISTORICAL INFORMATION RELATING TO MILITARY POSTS
& OTHER INSTALLATIONS, 1700-1900

These microfilm rolls reproduce the 27 volume -Outline of Military Forts and Stations.- The set contains historical information about military posts and other installations for the period 1700-1900. The records are held by the Adjutant General's Office.


Entries vary for each installation and may include: when and by whom established and abandoned; geographic location; origin or derivation of its name; names of units stationed there and period of assignment; history, geology, and plant life of the area; and construction details. The information is arranged alphabetically with an index at the beginning of each reel.


NEGRO IN THE MILITARY SERVICE OF THE U.S., 1639-1886- 5 rolls

These five rolls contain the seven volumes of records compiled by the Colored Troops Division of the Adjutant General's Office. This division was established in 1863. Its functions included all matters pertaining to the recruitment, organization, and service of black troops and their officers.


Records from the Bureau of the Census, U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, Quartermaster General, and the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands are included. The information is arranged chronologically from the Colonial Period through 1886.


REGISTER OF ENLISTMENTS IN THE U.S. ARMY, 1798-1914- 81 rolls

This microfilm reproduces registers of names of enlisted men in the Regular Army. The information was compiled from enlistment papers, muster rolls of the Regular Army, and other records. Except for pension records, these registers may be the only source of information on enlisted personnel serving in the Regular Army during the 19th century.


Entries for each may show: when, where, and by whom he was enlisted; the period of enlistment; place of birth; age at time of enlistment; civilian occupation; physical description; unit or regiment to which he was assigned; and additional remarks.


The records are arranged chronologically and thereunder alphabetically by the first letter of surname (i.e., Smith, Saunders, Sutherland, Samuels). The entries for individual soldiers are chronological by date of enlistment.


RETURNS FROM U.S. MILITARY POSTS, 1800-1916 - MISSOURI - 32 rolls

Most of the records reproduced on the microfilm are monthly post returns. The commanding officer of every post was required to submit monthly reports, called returns, to the Adjutant General's Office. The report was designed to show the units that were stationed at a post, their strength, the names and duties of the officers, the number of officers, listing of official communications received and a record of events. Other papers and reports included for the posts contain historical information relating to the establishment and the abandonment of the post.


The posts are arranged alphabetically on the rolls. The following post returns are available for Missouri.

These files were created by the Military Division of the Missouri. They relate to Indian engagements and campaigns in the Northern and Southern Plains, Colorado and New Mexico. In addition, the files contain information on military expeditions and surveys, civil problems involving Native Americans and settlers, military reservations and posts, and on the employment of Indian scouts.


The files are arranged in three subseries; military operations arranged by geographic area; files pertaining to administrative concerns with regard to Indian scouts and military reservations; and miscellaneous subjects. Within series documents are generally arranged in chronological order.

WORLD WAR I DRAFT REGISTRATION CARDS - MISSOURI- 135 rolls

In May of 1917, The Selective Service Act was passed. The Selective Service System was responsible for the process of Selecting men for induction into the military service, from the initial registration to the actual delivery of men to military training camps. The Selective Service System was made up of 4,648 local boards in the 52 U.S. states and territories.


Local boards were established for each county or similar subdivision in each state. In heavily populated areas a board was established for each 30,000 persons. Local boards were charged with the registration, determination of order and serial numbers, classification, call and entrainment of draftees.
There were three registrations during World War I.
  • June 5, 1917 - all men between the ages of 21 and 31
  • June 5, 1918 and August 24, 1918 - men who became 21 after June 5, 1917 and June 5, 1918
  • September 12, 1918 - all men 18 through 45

The information included on each registration varies however, most include: order and serial number, full name, date and place of birth, race, citizenship, occupation, personal description, and signature.
