CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION - DEPUTY DIRECTOR

RESPONSIBILITIES COMMON TO POSITION OF DEPUTY DIRECTOR:

Highly responsible administrative and professional position. Responsible for working with various staff to develop long-range goals. Also responsible for system-wide planning, implementation, and performance in most areas of public service, materials selection and collection development. Responsible for direct policy and procedure development relative to public service, personnel, and technical operations. Provide appropriate input to the Director in decision making situations and acts, when necessary in the Director’s absence. Coordinates many system-wide activities as well as those outside the system that directly relate to or effect the services to the St. Charles City-County Library.

TYPICAL DUTIES OF THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR POSITION:

Supervision of branch librarians and division managers, budgetary planning and implementation, plan, organize and supervise the implementation of public services including collection development and program coordination for adult services, coordinate activities of all branches and divisions, serve on, or chare, respective committees, review various professional journals, review materials and library publications, assist in planning of system-wide support services, be a member of and participate in professional organizations, develop policy and procedures relative to the daily operations of the district, perform personnel duties regarding professional staff and other supervisors, directly relating the library objectives to the community by attendance at meetings and community gatherings.

DIRECTION RECEIVED:

General direction is minimal and usually related to long-range planning and development. Professional and administrative knowledge widely applied. Most responsibilities allow for independent decision-making and independently judgement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master Degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association and 4 years experience in a highly responsible administrative library position.

Candidates possessing a second related masters degree or a 6th year library degree in areas relating to administration may be appointed at the higher of the two approved tracks.

TRANSFER AND PROMOTION:

The incumbents of the Deputy Director position on the lower track is eligible for promotion by approval of a professional development sequence based on Section #E032.1 of the Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual. All reclassifications are subject to Board approval.
