SUMMARY:
Manages the operations of a Regional Branch Library within the policies and procedures
set by the Library District. Responsible for branch staff, customer service issues, branch
programs, collection management, and facility maintenance. May include expertise in a
certain subject area such as business, children's, etc. Position performs professional
duties requiring the exercise of professional skill, initiative and independent
judgement.
Assignments are given in broad terms of general objectives and performed with
administrative supervision only.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Management:
- Responsible for the daily operations of a Regional Branch Library including management
of all branch services and programs according to Library District policies.
- Direct the compiling of branch statistics to accurately represent branch activities.
- Communicates effectively with all other Branches and Departments and attends
Administrative and Board meetings.
Branch Maintenance:
- Coordinates the internal and external maintenance of the branch building and grounds to
provide a safe, clean environment reporting any major concerns to the Administrative
Offices.
- Responsible for the internal arrangement of the branch including functional floor plans,
appropriate displays and signage.
Collection Management:
- Coordinates material selection and collection development within the branch.
- Coordinates collection maintenance to generate space for new items and ensures that
current, useful materials are available.
Budget:
- Participates in developing and monitoring branch budget including materials, equipment
and personnel.
- Works with the appropriate General Administration personnel in bidding necessary items
and services for the branch.
- Oversees branch expenditures insuring appropriate recording and handling of fines and
fees.
Public Relations:
- Interprets and enforces Library District policies and procedures for customers and
employees.
- Handles difficult customer issues or transactions as they occur.
- Serves as a liaison between the branch and the surrounding community participating in
organizations and events, as needed.
- Responsible for marketing and promoting library materials and services both in the
branch and in the community through presentations, promotions and branch tours.
- Works cooperatively with local customers and agencies in placing volunteers in useful
positions in the branch.
Employee Development:
- Interviews, hires, trains, evaluates and manages branch employees, or delegates the
responsibility as needed.
- Reviews employee performance and approves salary increases, interprets policy and
procedure addressing disciplinary issues.
- Oversees the scheduling of staff for all areas of the branch.
- Informs branch staff of changes in library policies and procedures and serves as a
liaison to District administration.
GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Works at the Reference or Children's desk, as scheduling requires.
- Chairs or serves on committees and task forces within the District.
- Participates in local, state or national professional organizations.
EQUIPMENT:
Telephone, personal computer, fax, copier, and library automation system.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Must have knowledge of the functions of public libraries; have
excellent communication and organizational skills; and have general computer
literacy. Must have an accredited Masters in Library Science degree and at least
5 years experience in related areas and excellent customer service skills. Prior
management or supervisory experience preferred.
