SUMMARY:
Perform public service duties in the circulation area and respond to inquiries in
person and by telephone. Responsibilities include using the automated circulation
system, performing computer functions, and doing basic clerical duties of filing and
keyboarding. Perform duties of a working supervisor for Library Assistants and Pages
in a General Purpose Branch; develop staff schedules, write performance
evaluations, and resolve public service problems in a General Purpose Branch.
Receive general supervision, performing routine tasks independently and referring
complex questions and situations to the Branch Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Interview, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate Pages and Library
Assistants in General Purpose Branch.
- Interact with customers in the library and by telephone concerning materials,
circulation, reserves and overdues, and prepare library cards.
- Plan and coordinate the operation of the Branch circulation area, including resolving
public service problems.
- Coordinate work in retrieving overdue items.
- Count cash drawers and prepare financial reports.
- Maintain periodicals including checking in records on the database, claiming missing
issues, withdrawing periodicals, and making other necessary changes.
- Maintain meeting room calendar and schedule for the branch.
- Gather monthly branch statistics and prepare monthly reports.
- Sort mail and coordinate the incoming and outgoing Library District deliveries.
GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Unlocking and locking the library, and arming and disarming the security system, when
necessary.
- Participate in branch reserves including verifying, routing, and notifying customers of
reserves.
- Verify and sign Page and/or Library Assistant Timesheets.
- Receive and record reservations for adult and childrens programs in person and by
telephone.
- Create labels and prepare correspondence for circulation business.
- Maintain adequate library supplies.
- Trouble shoot equipment problems, repairing them when possible and calling for repair
service, as needed.
- Help customers operate equipment including the automated catalog, copiers, and money
changers.
- Assist customers with material selection.
- Register voters.
EQUIPMENT:
Copier, telephone, personal computer/typewriter, automated catalog, electronic
periodical index, coin change machine, desensitizer, shredder, building security system.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Two (2) years of public service or related experience, keyboarding skills
and mathematical accuracy, knowledge of public library's function and purpose, High School
Diploma or GED and proven ability to perform duties of Library Assistant 1.
Preferred: Completion of two to four years of college and prior supervisory
experience.
