ADULT COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY

SUBJECT: GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY -- 900

Description: Books and other library materials relating to geography and history. These include atlases; travel guides relating to individual nations, states and /or cities; collective biographies; genealogical materials; histories of individual countries and/or states; and the history of specific periods of time.

Influencing factors: An in-depth genealogical collections is available at the St. Louis Public Libraries. The SCCCLD maintains a local genealogical collection at the Kathryn Linnemann branch with an emphasis on St. Charles County related materials. The popularity of certain tourist locations may fluctuate, depending on the local population. The status of individual countries and the interest in specific historical events or areas may change, depending on politics, social factors, or chronology. These materials will be collected as necessary.

Retention: Retrospective retention of major historical and genealogical works is necessary. Condition of the material and current usage will determine the retention of the most popular materials. Travel guides date quickly, as much of the information contained within is time-sensitive, and require timely replacement.

Current selection: Comprehensive subject coverage at a basic level for the general customer will be the primary consideration in most areas. The exceptions are genealogical materials relating to the local area, travel guides as discussed above, and material published for the anniversary year of a specific historical event, as these materials give unique coverage of such events and are often only available during the anniversary year.

Retrospective selection: Retrospective development will include checking current subject bibliographies as available, particularly for the replacement of missing or worn titles.
