Section D - COLLECTION MANAGEMENTPolicy Number D040ADULT COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICYSUBJECT: LITERATURE AND RHETORIC -- 800
Description: Books and other library materials relating to literature: including, rhetoric, American and English literature, and all other world literatures (both ancient and modern) as well as the history and criticism of these literatures. Please note, however, that SCCCLD has chosen to classify works of fiction separately, rather than include them in the 800 classification, and that a separate policy for fiction is included in this policy at the end of these Dewey Decimal Classification schedules. Influencing factors: Since a number of academic libraries are available in the metropolitan area for in-depth research, our collection will only meet the demands of the general reader. Retention: Works in this section do not become dated as quickly as works in more rapidly changing fields. The library will retain a collection of standard classic works in this field, to be replaced as the condition of the books makes necessary, or as new editions become available. Current selection: Comprehensive subject coverage for the general patron, being especially aware of new editions of standard works, as well as new works appearing in review media. Retrospective selection: The collection will be constantly scrutinized to identify areas where the collection is lacking. Patron demand, books which have been withdrawn or are missing, and subject bibliographies are all factors to consider.
