Section C - Public ServicesPolicy Number C281Programming - Adult
PHILOSOPHY: One of the mission statements of the Library District reads in part, "Provide noncurricular-related information and education services to the residents of St. Charles County." Adult programming is one of the methods by which this mission can be accomplished. Adult programming can be an extremely beneficial source of information for our patrons and employees when the content is quality controlled and/or monitored. "Libraries provide programs to inform, educate, and entertain their clients, and to promote further library use." (Output measures, p. 71) "A program is any planned event which introduces those attending to any of the broad range of library services or activities, or which directly provides information through the presentation of talks, films, drama, etc. Programs need not take place in the library, but the library must be the primary contributor of time, money, or people in the planning or presentation." (Output measures, p.72) "Book talks, tours, and film programs at the library are all examples of library programs. A presentation to a class in the public school and a film shown for a service club meeting should also be counted. However, activities such as ongoing exhibits, contests run by the library, handouts, parades, or library booths at fairs would not be considered "programs" for this measure. Use of the library meeting room by groups other than the library itself is not counted either." (Output measures, p. 72) APPROACH: Programming shall be a system-wide centralized and coordinated effort. There shall be a limited number of individually developed programs which require dedicated staff time. Programs shall be of high quality and controlled content with specific audiences targeted for each program. The Planning for program presentation shall be the responsibility of library staff. Individually developed programs will be limited to approximately 6 per 6-month period. Of those, there will be one major event and up to five other well defined programs. Individual programs will be held at various locations based upon the anticipated attendance. (Approved 5/14/90) |
