BOOKS

Nearly 800,000 books are available for all ages of library users.

Circulating Books
* Books that are available for check out.

* These are divided into Adult, Young Adult and Children's collections.

* Adult Collection
Fiction-- Arranged alphabetically by last name of the author.
Non-fiction--Arranged by subject, using the Dewey Decimal system.

* Young Adult Collection
Serves middle school through high school age young people Non-fiction-arranged by subject, using the Dewey Decimal system. Young adult non-fiction books are shelved with the adult non-fiction. A special YA sticker is attached to YA non-fiction. Fiction books are shelved in a separate area and arranged alphabetically by the last name of the author. The Young Adult fiction call number is preceded by a "YA".


* Children's Collection
Serves preschool through middle school age children.
Call number is preceded by a "J".
Non-fiction-arranged by subject, using the Dewey Decimal system.Fiction-divided into picture books for preschoolers, easy readers forprimary grades, and fiction for intermediate grades through middle school. All fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the author.

* Nearly 13,000 LARGE PRINT books for adults are available in the District. These books are shelved in a special large print section at each branch.

* Adult Basic Education Books-ABE books for adults learning how to readare available at each branch. They are shelved in a special area of the branch.

Non-Circulating Reference Books

* Reference books are used to provide information for customers in the library.

* There are adult and children's Reference collections.

* Reference books are shelved in a separate area of the library and the call number is preceded by an "R".

* Reference books are arranged by subject, using the Dewey Decimal system.


AUDIO

* Over 60,000 audios are available for checkout

* Books-on-tape & CD -The the adult audio collection includes almost 30,000 books-on-tape or CD of fiction and non-fiction titles. These are popular with commuters and those planning a trip. Non-fiction books-on-tape are shelved by Dewey Decimal System. Fiction books-on-tape are shelved alphabetically by the last name of the author.

* CD - A large collection of various types of music for adults & children.

* Book/Cassette combinations of stories for preschool and school age children are available. Listeners follow along in a book as the cassette is played.

* Cassettes of popular children's music, educational material, storytelling, etc. are arranged by categories.


MAGAZINES & NEWSPAPERS

The St. Charles City-County Library District subscribes to a variety of magazines and newspapers. Readers may find periodicals on computers, crafts, hobbies, sports, news, decorating, current events, travel, science, automotive, finances, consumer information, religion, education, psychology, and many other topics. Each branch has a complete listing of periodicals and all the back issues kept throughout the District. The Magazine Listing is available at the Reference Desk. All periodicals are also listed in the online library catalog & may be searched by title or material type.

In addition to print copies, the Library District also provides non-print copies of selected magazines and newspapers on microfilm, CD-Rom, and microfiche. Hundreds of titles are also available online. Many online products that include full text articles are available to St. Charles City-County Library cardholders on their home computers. VIDEOCASSETTES & DVD's

* More than 53,000 videocassettes & DVD's are available for check out.

* Videocassettes and DVD's are divided into adult and children's collections. The non-fiction videos are classified by subject, using the Dewey Decimal System. The fiction videos are arranged in categories.

* The adult video collection includes how to and informational videos. Learn how to fix your plumbing or install electrical wiring! Take a video tour of the United States and other countries. The children's video collection features popular videos based on books as well as educational videos.


YOUNG ADULT SERVICES

The St. Charles City-County Library District offers specialized services to young people ages 12-18. The Young Adult collection includes books written specifically for this age group, popular CD's, comic books, magazines, and graphic novels. A Young Adult Council composed of teens that have volunteered meets on a regular basis to provide feedback and suggestions for Young Adult Services and materials. The St. Charles City-County Library District also provides a special Teen Homepage. Each branch also provides a staff member who works directly with Young Adults in the branch and selects materials for the collection. Programs are also offered for Young Adults. RENEWALS

  • Materials that have not been requested by another resident may be renewed:
    1. In person
    2. By calling any branch
    3. Online from home or in the library by using the LISTEN 2000 online library catalog

  • To renew books online from home or library catalog/computers:
    1. Access the library's web catalog by clicking the "Library Catalog" button on the library homepage http://www.youranswerplace.org.
    2. Select "St. Charles City-County Library Catalog" (located at the top of the page.)
    3. You will then see the page for the Library Catalog where you can search by Title, Author, Subject, etc.
    4. Click on the "Your Account" button on this page.
    5. Enter your library card barcode number (from your library card) and your last name.
    6. From here you can renew items, find out what you have checked out and if you owe any fines, and check or cancel any reserves.

  • There is a limit of six renewals per item.
  • Customers are liable for fines on overdue materials that are renewed.
  • Materials on reserve for another customer cannot be renewed.

RESERVE REQUESTS


TOURS & SPEAKERS

The St. Charles City-County Library District offers customized tours to groups such as daycares, scout troops, clubs, classes, etc. To schedule a tour, call the branch of your choice and ask for the Branch Manager or Children's Services if you are bringing a group of children. Tours may include how to use the online catalog, where types of materials are located, how to find information, types of services offered by the library district, a story or film, how to get a library card, etc. Classes on how to use the library are also offered periodically. Library staff are available to speak to local organizations such as Optimists, Extension Clubs, PTOs, Scout Troops, Church groups, etc. on the Library District in general or on specific topics such as: Business, Geographic Information Systems, Genealogy, Local History, Storytelling, Booktalks, Using the Internet, Government Documents, Children's Literature, or other topics as arranged. To schedule a speaker, contact the Branch Manager or Community Resource Bureau at 441-2300.


MEETING ROOMS

Most branches of the St. Charles City-County Library District offer free-of-charge meeting rooms to local nonprofit organizations and groups. Meeting rooms must be scheduled through a written application at each branch. For meeting room guidelines, check out the Library Policies database.


OTHER

* State & Federal Tax Forms-Forms are available at library branches from January through April. Sets of forms are available for copying all year round.

* Pamphlet files provide a cornucopia of information on a myriad of topics.

* Free mailing list for selected library publications.

* Copy machines & print-outs from the Local Area Network
